VITAMINS AND MINERALS FOR FIREFIGHTERS

A vitamin is an organic molecule that is essential for the proper functioning of your metabolism and body. Essential nutrients cannot be created by your body, and therefore must be obtained through the diet or supplementation. Because it is sometimes difficult to get proper nutrients through whole foods, the following supplements can assist you with maximizing your health:

MULTIVITAMIN FOR FIREFIGHTERS

A multivitamin is an excellent way to ensure that you are getting your required vitamins no matter what you eat. They help improve brain function, eyesight, and even your immune system. Research has shown that taking a multi-vitamin has tremendous benefits to your health and can help reduce the risk of chronic diseases, such as heart disease, something all too common to firefighters. There are many options out there on the market, but make sure you get a reputable brand and product.  Spending an extra buck can sometimes be the difference between a great vitamin or sugar pill.

FISH OIL

Fish oil is the fat or oil removed from fish and processed, usually into a pill form. Studies have shown that people who eat a lot of fish have much lower rates of heart disease, which as stated above, is something we all know is prevalent throughout the fire service. Fish oil is also good for reducing blood pressure, reducing plaque that builds up throughout your arteries, and can also lower triglycerides. Fish oils are also great for reducing inflammation, supporting eye health, improving skin quality, and reducing liver fat as well.  When shopping for a fish oil supplement, make sure the quality is there, as there are many cheap options on the market.  Aim to find one that contains at least 500 mg of EPA and DHA per 1000 mg, make sure it is third party tested or has a seal pf purity, and that it has a sustainability certification.
